Faith Formation Level 3: First Communion

Dear Parents:

This year in Faith Formation your children will be preparing for the sacrament of First Holy Communion. During this time, we will be discussing all the parts of the mass and the prayers that are said during the mass. Those prayers will include the Penitential Rite, the Nicene Creed, the Invitation to Prayer and the Invitation to Communion. I have not included the Our Father in this list as they should have learned it in previous years, but it still is an important part of the mass. Our focus in class will be the Nicene Creed. Please help your child learn these prayers. They are attached to this letter.  As we prepare to make the Sacrament, we will continue to learn more about our faith as well. We will be using the Be My Disciples book and the Blessed book this year.  My expectations for your child are that they come to class prepared and ready to listen as well as participate. This year I will be using Class Dojo to communicate with you about any important things coming up and how your child is doing in class. The app for your phone is free, if you do not have a smart phone you can use the website. I will invite you using the email we have on file for you. Please sign up! Note that this is different than the Remind app that Mrs. Sandona uses to communicate with you. Lastly, I urge you to attend church every weekend so your child may participate in the mass. There are two ways to attend mass: you can reserve a spot for in-person mass by calling the rectory or you can view mass on the website stjohnbap.org. I am excited to get to know and work with your child this year!

Thank you,

Miss Kristen Stoklosa

Prayers to Learn

Penitential Rite

I confess to almighty God, And to you, my brothers and sisters, That I have greatly sinned. In my thoughts and in my words, In what I have done and in what I have Failed to do, Through my fault, through my fault, Through my most grievous fault; Therefore I ask blessed Mary ever-Virgin, All the Angels and Saints, And you, my brothers and sisters, To pray for me to the Lord our God.

The Nicene Creed (split into 4 parts)

I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible.

I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven, and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets.

I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen

Invitation to Prayer

May the Lord accept the sacrifice at your hands for the praise and glory of his name, for good and the good of all his holy Church.

Invitation to Communion

Lord, I am not worthy that you should enter under my roof, but only say the word and my soul shall be healed.
